At The Hospital

Sam: How are you doing champ?

Nora: You were so brave when they stuck that needle in your arm.

Matthew: You closed your eyes.

Nora: You bet I did! Cause your mommy's a big scardy cat.

Troy: Okay everything looks good. The medication is infusing. We'll take a blood work afterwards and see if there's any change in the viral load.

Sam: When will that be?

Troy: Oh hopefully not too long, but it could take several hours.

Sam: Several hours?!

Troy: Well Sam, like I said this is a very experimental procedure.

Nora: Troy.

Troy: Yeah?

Nora: I want to thank you for everything that you've done, because, well I don't know . . .

Sam: You've been great with Matthew. Really, really great and we really appreciate that.

Troy: Your welcome, but you don't have to thank me. After what my brother put you through, it's the least I can do. . . Okay, well I'm going to give you guys a few minutes alone with my #1 patient here.

Nora: Okay.

Troy: I'll be back in a little bit, okay?

Nora: Yes, thank you.

Troy: You hang tough, alright partner. (extending a closed fist)

Matthew: (hitting his fist on top of Troy's) I will.

Troy: You better. (he leaves)

Matthew: Mommy?

Nora: (sitting next to the bed) Yes my sweetie.

Matthew: Is this really going to make me better?

Nora: Yes of course this medicine will make you better. And if this one doesn't, we'll get another one that will.

Matthew: Who will, Dr. Troy?

Nora: Yes Dr. Troy will. But this one, this one is going to make you better. You know that.

Matthew: And then I could go home?

Nora: Absolutely! Right where you belong.

Sam: You just let us worry about the medicine. You just concentrate on getting better.

Matthew: Okay.

Nora: Can I get you anything? Do you want a drink of water or anything?

Matthew: Yeah.

Nora: You do. Okay I'll get you a drink of water.

Matthew: I want Dr. Troy to get it for me.

Nora: Uh Matthew sweetie . . .

Sam: Of course he can. You stay here, I'll go get him for you.

Nora: No, I'll go get him.

Sam: Are you sure?

Nora: Yeah, yeah, well I'm up . . . Alright I'm going to go get Dr. Troy, okay. Don't you go getting cuter while I'm gone. (kissing his forehead)

Sam: What about me?

Nora: Impossible. (opening the door) Sam?

Sam: Yeah?

Nora: Thank you.

Sam: Anytime.

Troy goes to his office and walks in to find it ransacked.

Troy: Lindsay Rappaport! I should have known. What the hell do you think you're doing?

Lindsay: I'm waiting for you. You double-crossing, dirty dealer.

Troy: The name is Troy, not Colin. And if you forget again you could look at the name tag. (holding the tag up) See!

Lindsay: Oh I know who you are, and you're not going to get away with what you've done.

Troy: Wha . . . what I've done?! (sitting on the edge of his desk) This outta be good.

Lindsay: Revenge usually is. That's why I'm going to see to it personally.

Troy: (picking up scattered files) What brought on the latest temper tantrum this time Lindsay?

Lindsay: Oh, don't you patronize me.

Troy: Don't patronize you? How would you like me to treat you Lindsay? Will you look at the mess you made.

Lindsay: What about the mess you made?

Troy: Me?!

Lindsay: Yes you.

Troy: I gotta tell you Lindsay, I don't know what you're talking about.

Lindsay: We had a deal.

Troy: We had a deal?!

Lindsay: Yeah and becasue of your big mouth my sister is gone. She left town. Lanie had one shot at happiness and you took it away from her. And at the same time you nearly got me into some very big trouble.

Troy: Is there anything that happens to you that isn't someone else's fault?

Lindsay: Drop dead.

Troy: I'm assuming this has to do with me giving Bo the results of his blood test.

Lindsay: We had an agreement. You said I would be the one to give him the results of that blood test. Or don't you remember?

Troy: NO, what I remember is you leaving here under the assumption that I was just going to roll over for you, but I never had an agreement and we never had a deal. Although I do remember some sort of offer on your part to keep my mouth shut.

Lindsay: You're disgusting.

Troy: I'm honest. Which I imagine does disgust you. Let's get one thing straight Lindsay. I would never lie to a patient about their medical condition in exchange for someone else's so-called friendship. DO YOU understand me?!

Lindsay: Oh well aren't we Mr. Ethics.

Troy: That's Dr. Ethics to you! And when it comes to my patients, you can bet I am.

Lindsay: You are nothing but a fraud.

Troy: What?!

Lindsay: A deceitful, manipulative fraud, pretending to be above it all. You are just like your brother.

Troy: Okay you know what, it's time for you to leave. (trying to grab her arm) Let's go.

Lindsay: (backing away) You know on second thought, I changed my mind. Colin wasn't nearly as bad. You always knew where you stood with Colin. I mean he was very up front with people in his own twisted way, but you . . . you

Troy: What about me Lindsay?

Lindsay: You are so two-faced. You're worse than Colin ever was.

Nora: Oh no he's not! And how dare you imply otherwise. Who are you to judge anyone?

Lindsay: And who are you, a public defender now? I've never seen you jump to my defense like this.

Nora: And please take it personally. For your information, Troy happens to be a caring and compassionate man. And a wonderfully gifted doctor.

Lindsay: Oh for crying out loud.

Nora: And for you to compare him to a monster like Colin is just plain wrong.

Lindsay: Well I'm shocked you think I've done something wrong Nora. It's so unlike you.

Troy: Please Nora, you don't have to defend me.

Nora: Oh yes I do. You are not your brother and it's time the simple-minded people of this town realized it.

Lindsay: Oh well hasn't someone changed her turn about . . .

Troy: (reaching for Lindsay's arm) Okay, you know what that's enough. Let's go.

Lindsay: (shrugging his hand off) No, no, no please Nora you must tell me because I am so simple-minded. What happened to change your mind so drastically? Oh wait, wait you don't have to tell me. You and Troy got to "know each other" a little better.

Nora: Well for your information, yes, Troy and I have gotten to know each other a little better, but not in the vulgar way you're implying.

Lindsay: Well we all know how the MacIver men throw themselves at your feet. Of course they usually need a little push down the stairs first.

Nora: Leave it to you to say something so completely inappropriate while my son is lying in a hospital bed fighting for his life.

Lindsay: What?!

Nora: That's right. Matthew is sick. And you have the audacity to stand here and waste everybody's time.

Lindsay: I didn't know Nora. What's wrong with him? What's wrong with him? I want to know.

Nora: He has a virus. A very rare and dangerous virus. It's bad. So if you don't mind.

Lindsay: Poor Sam! (And she leaves)

In Matthew's room

Matthew: (they are playing with Legos) Daddy?

Sam: Yeah buddy.

Matthew: I'm scared.

Sam: You are? Well how about if I tell you a story? Would that make you feel better?

Matthew: Is it a good story?

Sam: Oh it's a terrific story, it's telling about the day you were born . . .You see there was this big snowstorm with lots and lots of snow. And it covered the whole town like a big white fluffy blanket. And you, you were still inside mommies' tummy. But somehow you found out about the storm and decided it was time to come out and say "hello!" (laughs) And there was one small problem with that.

Matthew: What?

Sam: Well I didn't know if I could get mommy to the hospital.

Matthew: Why not?

Sam: You see my car got stuck in that snow and my wheels just kept spinning and spinning and spinning. It wouldn't move. So you know what I had to do?

Matthew: What?

Sam: I had to pick up mommy and carry her all the way to the hospital.

Matthew: And I was still in mommies' tummy?

Sam: The whole time.

Matthew: Was it scary?

Sam: Scary? Nah, not at all. You know why?

Matthew: Why?

Sam: Becasue we got to the hospital in time and the doctors, they took care of your mommy. And they took care of you, just like Dr. Troy's doing now. So you see it's good that you're here. That means you're going to get better. So there's absolutely nothing for you to be afraid of. (Lindsay comes in and puts her hand on his shoulder)

Lindsay: Sam

In Troy's Office

Nora is helping Troy pick up the mess that Lindsay had made.

Troy: Please Nora, just just leave it. Look why don't you go back to Matthew.

Nora: He's fine. Sam's with him, okay. Besides I've kind of grown accustom to cleaning up after Lindsay.

Troy: Nora, thank you.

Nora: Thank me. Why? For what? For this?

Troy: No, for defending me. It was completely unnecessary but it was also very much appreciated.

Nora: Don't mention it, please. If you really want to know the truth, if Lindsay Rappaport thinks you're a bad person that makes you A OK in my book.

Troy: I think I'm going to have to remember that one.

Nora: Besides I meant what I said to her. You are a very caring and compassionate man, and a wonderfully gifted doctor.

Troy: Wow, that sounds like a direct quote.

Nora: And I'm going to have to add perceptive to that list.

Troy: Perceptive?

Nora: Cause I am anxious to get back to Matthew but not as anxious as he is to see you.

Troy: He is?!

Nora: Oh please! The sun rises and sets on his Dr. Troy. (walks to the door)

Troy: I don't know where he got that from.

Nora: From his mother, who thinks the exact same thing. (Troy is pleased by her comment. Nora walks out the door, then comes back when she realizes Troy isn't following.) Hello, are you coming?!

Troy: Uh yeah, yeah. (grabbing his lab coat, he follows Nora)

In Matthew's room

Lindsay: I came as soon as I heard. I'm so sorry.

Sam: No, don't be sorry. Everything's fine. Right Matt?

Lindsay: Well of course it is. Why wouldn't it be? (to Matthew) Hi sweetie.

Matthew: (shyly) Hi.

Lindsay: I'm sorry Sam. I wasn't thinking.

Sam: That's okay

Lindsay: Are you okay?

Sam: Yeah I'm hanging in there.

Lindsay: I just want you to know that you and Matthew are in my prayers.

Sam: Thank you. And if you could see it in you to include Nora in those prayers.

Lindsay: Well I think that goes without saying. I mean she is his mother and I do think have an idea of what she's going through.

Sam: You do?!

Lindsay: Yes, you remember how scared I was when Jenn got the chicken pox.

Sam: This is a little more serious than chicken pox.

Lindsay: Well that was a very serious case.

Sam: Yeah, yeah I know. And I remember okay. That was bad, this is worse.

Lindsay: Oh I see, so my maternal suffering couldn't possibly be as bad as Nora's. Is that it?

Sam: That's not what I'm saying.

Lindsay: Well with you, you don't have to because it's always implied.

Sam: I really don't have time for this Lindsay. I need to concentrate on Matthew now and Nora. Not on you and your raving insecurities. (walking back to Matthew's bedside)

Lindsay: Oh just like when we were married. The good old days.

Sam: (turning to look at Lindsay) What did you say?!

Lindsay: Nothing.

Nora and Troy walk in.

Nora: Lindsay, I want you out of my son's room, NOW!

Lindsay: I came here to offer my condolences.

Nora: Oh, and I'm sure they're very sincere.

Lindsay: They are.

Nora: I'd like you to leave my son's room right now, please

Sam: (he grabs Lindsay's arm) Yeah I think you should leave Lindsay. It's the last thing that Matthew needs.

Lindsay: (to Sam) Okay but I meant what I said. You will all be in my prayers. (She leaves)

Nora: Why doesn't that make me feel very good?

Sam: Forget about her.

Nora: Oh that's my mantra. (to Troy) How's he doing?

Troy: Oh he's doing great.

Nora: And the treatment?

Troy: Well it's still too soon to tell yet.

Matthew: Can I have my water now?

Nora: Oh sweetie pie, have you been waiting this long for your water?

Sam: You were gone for a while.

Nora: I ran into Lindsay.

Sam: Got it!

Nora: (to Troy) And actually he wanted you to give him his water. That's why I came to get you in the first place

Troy: Ah well you're in luck. Getting water is my specialty. You know I went to waterboy camp when I was kid. (handing Matthew a cup) Here you go buddy.

Sam: (to Nora) This is going to work. Our little boy is going to get better

Nora: You promise?

Sam: I promise. (Sam and Nora hug. Lindsay peeks back in and sees Sam and Nora, and Troy just watching them.)

Nora: I'm going to hold you to that promise.

Sam: Please do.

Troy: Matthew's IV needs to be changed. I'll be right back.

Nora: Hey you're finished with your water. That was fast.

Matthew: Daddy told me a story about how I was born in the snow.

Sam: Well skipping a few details.

Matthew: Do you remember how daddy carried you?

Nora: (she sadly looks at Sam) You know what, I never tire of hearing that story. Will you tell it to me sometime?

Matthew: Okay.

Nora: Oh I can't wait!

Matthew: Mommy?

Nora: Yes sweetie.

Matthew: When I get better, can Daddy come live with us? (Sam and Nora look at each other)
