In Troy's Office

Nora: I know what I want. I want you Troy. (Troy looks up behind Nora. She turns around)

Sam: Sorry I'm late.

Nora: Sam!

Sam: Sorry I'm late. I came here to discuss Matthew's medical condition, but it seems that I've already missed a lot.

Nora: Uh, Dr. MacIver was just giving me a rundown on all methods that could be used with Matthew's treatment.

Sam: Mmmm, apparently you've already decided that Dr. MacIver is going to be in charge of our son's case.

Nora: NO, I told Dr. MacIver that you and I make decisions together.

Troy: Sam, I gave Nora a list of specialists and the treatments they'd be likely to suggest.

Nora: There's really not a lot of choices here Sam. As a matter of fact, I eliminated the wait and see methods because, well I did that immediately. And there are other more traditional methods but their cure rate is so low, I just thought it seemed more hopeless than anything else. But there is a very promising new drug there.

Sam: And according to this, it's experimental.

Nora: Yes, but it showed really remarkable results to similar strains of the virus.

Sam: And Dr. MacIver's the only doctor on this list prepared to administer the new drug in treating this virus.

Troy: As I told Nora, please feel free to call one or all . . .

Sam: If you don't mind doctor, I'd like to talk to Nora alone.

Troy: Of course. I Tell you what, why don't you guys use my office. I'm going to go get some coffee. (he leaves)

Nora: Why are you so angry Sam?!

Sam: I'm just curious, if I'd shown up 5 minutes later, would Matthew already be hooked up to an IV?

Nora: Okay, no one's trying to exclude you, but you were late. I just wanted to get the information as soon as possible.

Sam: I got here as soon as I could and you got your information and you made your decision.

Nora: Well frankly I don't think there's a viable alternative.

Sam: Just the one protocol administered by Dr. MacIver.

Nora: Okay I don't want you to go there, Sam. You can't go there. This isn't about Troy or Colin or even you or me. This is only about Matthew.

Sam: I know that very well. What I don't understand is why you rushed to put Matthew at risk with an unproven treatment?

Nora: I think we put him at greater risk if we do nothing.

Sam: Who here is suggesting that we do nothing?

Nora: Well?

Sam: I have done some research on my own Nora. MacIver, he's no expert at this.

Nora: Sam, no one is.

Sam: Yeah, well admittedly it's a very rare virus.

Nora: Yes I know. I know, that's what's so scary about it. But you see, Dr. MacIver's actually seen a case of Robins-Wyler before and he's been following all the developements in the field. This experimental drug is actually our only ray of hope.

Sam: It's never been used on a child before.

Nora: He said that he would monitor Matthew really carefully and adjust the dosage.

Sam: It's never been used on a child before.

Nora: I know there are great risks yes, but if we don't do anything that's a greater risk. And this drug is actually, if it wipes out the virus, if it works and wipes it out completely, we'll know immediately. We'll know right away. We won't have to wait weeks and months.

Sam: What if it harms Matthew? Will we know about that right then and there, huh?

Nora: We'll be right by his side. I mean if there's a problem.

Sam: What if we're too late? I mean what if we're too late? I don't understand why you're putting so much faith in this man.

Nora: This man . . . had a hunch, a far-fetched hunch, he ordered tests that showed what Matthew had conclusively. Doesn't that chain of events warrant some faith?

Sam: You know there's a specialist on this list that testified for me in court and I would . . . I trust her and I would like to consult with her.

Nora: Well then do! Go right ahead. Talk to anybody you want to but just don't drag it out. Time is completely critical here.

Sam: NO Matthew's welfare is very critical. I will not entrust his life to Troy MacIver!

Troy: I overheard what you were saying Sam.

Sam: Well I'm sorry about that, but it doesn't change anything.

Troy: You don't have to explain. I understand that you have doubts about my ability to treat your son.

Sam: As long as we're all clear about that.

Troy: Well then we should also be clear about this. It was my intention to help you and Nora make an informed decision, not to push my own agenda. Now believe it or not, I only have Matthew's best interests at heart.

Nora: Time is critical.

Troy: Well now Nora, when I said you needed to act quickly, I was speaking about days not hours, but obviously the sooner you start any type of treatment the better.

Nora: How soon can we start this treatment assuming that Sam and I make that decision?

Troy: I'm available immediately, but it sounds to me like you and Sam have some things to talk about.

Sam: I have to make some calls before I do anything. (he leaves)

Nora: Well I'm sorry to put you in that position.

Troy: Please there's no need. It would be a tough decision for anyone.

Nora: Well that's the difference between Sam and me. When I make a decision I want to put it in action yesterday.

Troy: Well it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Nora: Yes well I've been accused of being pigheaded, you know with probably good reason, I just . . . once I have a feeling, I gotta go with my instincts, you know.

Troy: You have the courage of your convictions. I admire that.

Nora: Well Sam does too. .It's just that sometimes we don't have the same convictions.

Troy: Well something tells me your convictions are usually right.

Nora: Ah yes they are. But I've also been accused of arrogance.

Troy: Sometimes it's difficult not to be arrogant when you're right.

In the hallway, Sam is on the payphone.

Sam: Thank you doctor. No I appreciate your time very much . . . No you've been very helpful. Thanks.

He sees a nurse walking by with a stick.

Sam: Excuse me. What is that?

Nurse: It's Dr. MacIver's. And it's called a rain stick. Your son was playing with it.

Sam: Matthew?

Nurse: Uh huh.

Sam: How did he get that?

Nurse: Well the doctor and your son are great pals.

Sam: Yeah apparently so.

Nurse: Matthew said he always wants Dr. Troy to always be his doctor.

Sam: He does, huh?

Troy: Well! Can I get you some coffee or something?

Nora: Oh no, no please. I'm wired enough as it is.

Troy: Okay. (both feeling uneasy being alone)

Nora: You know if Matthew isn't at the hospital tonight, I think I'm going to make his favorite meal.

Troy: Oh yeah, what's that?

Nora: Frank and beans.

Troy: (laughing) Frank and beans!

Nora: Uh huh. And it's a good thing too, because it's the only thing I know how to cook. Not a very good cook, but I guess you figured that out from my menu selection. I'm a, well there's a lot of things um you didn't know about me, isn't there . . . like the fact that I babble when I'm nervous. Like I'm doing right now. Oh dear!

Troy: I'm getting to learn quite a lot about you, yes.

Nora: And they're all just fascinating details too. Oy!

Troy: You're a very interesting woman.

Nora: And you are obviously very polite.

Sam walks back in.

Sam: Do it! Take care of our son.

Nora: Thank you. (she hugs him)
