Near the train crash site. Colin continues to work on Nora, both are dirty and Nora lies uncommunicative on the ground. Colin wears a scrub shirt and has a visible cut on right cheek.
Colin: (Colin bends down, breathing hard, checks pulse on neck) You're a very lucky woman. I don't know about me, but someone's definitely on your side. You have to make it. You hear me? (Nora's eyes flutter) Yeah…yeah, you heard me. Now you have to promise me you'll stay alive. (tightens her coat around her)
Next scene, still at site
Colin: I'll take care of you, but I need you to stay absolutely still. Can you do that? Good. Good girl. Just keep breathing. I'm out of epinephrine. (Nora shakes slightly, Colin takes off his scrub shirt and puts under her head) You know you wear a train explosion pretty well. (takes a jacket off ground and puts over her) I think we've hung around here long enough. Huh, Scarlet? Let's say we blow this Popsicle-stand. (stands up, looks around) Think there's a bus route that comes through here? I don't know about you, but I don't plan on getting on a train any time soon. (sighs) Damn it! (leans down near her) Listen, Scarlet. I have to leave you for a minute. Now don't worry, I'll be right back. But, I'll take care of you. It's a promise. (gently strokes her hair) (Colin leaves)
Colin returns with scrap metal.
Colin: (checks pulse, lays scrap metal nearby) You're doing fine. Just fine. But I can't keep you all to myself, though. We've got to get you to a hospital. (rolls her on her side) Gotta make sure I don't do anymore damage to your back or pelvis. (rolling her onto the scrap metal, like a backboard) I know that it's not an Aston Martin, but I'll do my best. Have you ever ridden in an Aston Martin? (secures first-aid tape across forehead) Naw... I can picture more a classic '57 Chevy convertible type, aren't cha? Hair blowing in the wind... top rolled down… radio turned up loud. (wraps tape over her lower body) I bet you sing along don't cha? I betcha know all the words. (lost in thought, looking at her) Your car. Your car. (Nora opens and closes her eyes, eyes continue to flutter afterward) Hey, come on Scarlet. Stay with me now. Stay with me now. (Colin looks around)
Emergency Room at Cherryvale Clinic
(rushing Nora in on a stretcher through the entrance) (Colin dressed in green EMT jacket)
Colin: (hurried to male nurse) Post-traumatic arrest; CPR, epi; smoke inhalation; compressions to her pelvis and right hand; 1st degree burns to her face and neck; 2nd degree burns to her left hand and wrist.
Male Nurse: Got it.
Nurses rush Nora into Trauma room
(Outside room)
Attending (Main ER Doctor): What --indistinguishable medical jargon-- was she at?
Colin: 10. Pupils equal and reactive.
Attending: We'll take her from here.
Colin: (insistent) No, I'm not leaving her.
Attending: No, we got her. You take care of yourself-
Colin: (very insistent) I promised her I'd see it through.
Attending: (hesitant) All right, let's go.
Colin and Attending rush into trauma room
Colin: (pointing) Get her on a monitor. Go to one. Line 4 bilaterally. She's volume depleted!
Attending: You have any pulse?
Colin: Her pulse is weak.
Female Nurse: By-line rate, 56. Need another 16.
Colin: Come on, she's volume depleted! (tying off her arm)
Female Nurse: No vein.
Colin: Go.
Attending: Get a cut down tray. (swabbing her arm)
Female Nurse: Pulse rate 50.
Colin: Come on, didn't come this far to loose you now.
Female Nurse: Respirations 12, --medical jargon--at 84.
Attending: She breathing?
Colin: I have a line! I need atropine! (Male nurse hands a syringe to Colin)
Attending: Move on in! (pause, Colin sticks Nora) Less pressure.
Female Nurse: Palps 80, pulse 40
Colin: Let's go people! We got a lot of work to do.
Camera pans out while nurses continue to work on Nora.
Next scene, sometime later. Calm atmosphere, Nora fitted with an oxygen mask and neck brace
Female Nurse: (checking vitals on monitor) Pulse stabilized, 65. BP: 90 over 60.
Attending: Good. Get x-ray in here, stat.
Colin: (bends down and gently touching Nora's arm, looks up) Where's Lanie?
Attending: She left a while a go. She's pretty worried about you.
Another Doctor: Dr. MacIver?
Attending: Come on, let him get his x-rays. (Colin touches Nora's arm) I'll get your- ah- arm sutured up. (Colin looks at arm as though never noticed the wound)
Outside trauma room
Attending: Pretty impressive work, Colin. Getting her here. You saved her life.
Colin: Yeah. Let's hope
Attending: How'd you do it?
Colin: A little faith. A little luck.
Attending: Yeah and the shirt off your back.
Colin: (looks down, chuckles) Yeah. I know. (wiping dirt off hands)
Attending: (To passing nurse) Excuse me. But I need a suture room prep, stat. (to Colin) Were you both in the car when it exploded?
Colin: (disoriented) I don't know. (Pause, remembering) The car shifted, I was able to pull her out of the wreckage. I got her over my shoulder and just headed away from the train. That's the last thing I remember. When I came to in the woods…(looks at Nora) she wasn't breathing. (lively) So, I went to the work.
Attending: Do you know her name? There was no ID.
Colin: Uh-un. I call her Scarlet.
Attending: (laughs) Most families have given up hope of finding anyone alive. Someone's going to get some pretty wonderful news.
Colin: (mildly disappointed) Yeah.
Attending: Well, come on. Let's get you to the suture room. I need you in as semblance of good shape.
Colin: Why?
Attending: I have a breast-cancer patient whose beginning chemo tomorrow. You think you're up to signing on the case?
Colin: Sure. Sure. I'll meet you in the suture room. (Colin reenters room, comes close to Nora, smiling) Hey. Scarlet. (whispers) It's your chauffer. Till we find a family, looks like you're stuck with a one-man cheering section. (jokingly waits for a response, stroking her hair) Too thrilled for words, huh? (softer) Get some rest.
(Colin leaves)
Nora: Matthew... Matthew...
Camera fades to Lindsay holding Matthew at Nora's house with Bo at her side.
In a private room: Colin cleaned up, dressed in dark button down, cheek secure with a bandage strip
Colin: (checking vitals on monitor, pulls up chair) Nice going, Scarlet. Now, you just make it through the night, okay? Someone out there misses you. Now, don't you worry. We'll find them. Who ever it is pretty lucky-they get to spend the rest of their lives with you. Just look how happy you've made me and I've only known you (looks at watch) 22 hours. (dim) But don't you worry about me. I have someone of my own to find. Of course, she might not be so happy to see me alive but… (comforting) but then again that's not your problem. (stroking her hair) Night, Scarlet.
(Colin leaves.)
Nora: (opens eyes) Matthew... Matthew...
